PositivitiProject Challenge: Take Responsibility for Your Happiness

“Being happy doesn’t mean that everything is perfect.

It means that you’ve decided to look beyond the imperfections” -Unknown

Welcome to PositivitiProject! Thanks for visiting our blog! Here at PositivitiProject, we believe in spreading joy and living life to the fullest.

I’m Allie, one of the co-founders of PositivitiProject. I’ve always been the type of person who you can count on for a smile. I’m happy-go-lucky and am passionate about a variety of things, but I spent the summer before my sophomore year of college shedding far too many tears. I was miserable- living in a new place with complete strangers, starting a surprisingly demanding new job, and being away from my friends and family left me feeling overwhelmed. I struggled: searching for things to make me happy. However, I did have one friend. An amazingly insightful coworker who was always reaching out to me, and making the shifts we spent together not only bearable but pleasant. This made me realize that I did have positive elements in my life even if they were just interactions with one person. I had dug myself into a hole of misery by only looking at the aspects of my life that made me unhappy.

That summer, I felt like I was missing out on the entirety of my life- I wasn’t embracing the positive. The truth of the matter was that I didn’t realize the power of just one negative thought or comment. I complained about my situation, which wasn’t productive. I now know that happiness is not dependent on external factors. Being happy is a choice.

I started keeping a daily list of the things that made me happy. I wrote about small joys, like times when my two-stick popsicles split perfectly down the middle. Even though my entries were simple, I started to realize that I had so much to be grateful for. The negative elements of my life didn’t disappear but my quality of life flourished after I began looking past the negative and focusing on the positive.

I still keep lists of what I’m grateful for, along with the things that make me happy.

Here is the list I wrote yesterday:

1. Had a fabulous smoothie for breakfast
2. My car is a gem
3. I love listening to the radio before work
4. Thankful to have a job
5. Got to meet new people, make new friends
6. Proud that I made myself a delicious lunch
7. Working on billing at work
8. Laughing at my boyfriend’s silly phone call
9. Implemented a new system at work
10. Happy to be back on track & going to the gym
11. Having dinner with friends, playing a card game
12. I love the new sheets that my parents got me for Christmas
13. I talked to my parents on the phone

Every day I can successfully complete one of these lists, even if it’s composed of small stuff, like opening a new tube of toothpaste. This helps me stay positive and confident in my own life.

I’m challenging you. Right now, I am challenging you to keep a list of the things that make you happy. Do it throughout the day, or at the end of the night. Do whatever works for you- but take full responsibility for your own happiness.

Once you’ve written your list, share it and keep the positivity flowing.

Share your list with us:
-You can submit your list on this website under the “Submit” tab, or by emailing it to positivitiproject@gmail.com.

–>Share your list with your friends & family:
Focus your conversations on the good stuff- it’s way more productive than complaining or criticizing other people. Sharing your happiness will broadcast your personality. When I first started dating my boyfriend, I shared my list with him and it showed him the type of person I am and what I care most about. Sharing the highlights of my day led to more insightful and thoughtful conversations. Try it, you’ll be surprised what a little openness and positivity can lead to.
